The system will start taking shape over the Midwest on Wednesday, where places like Chicago, Detroit and Columbus could see rain and potentially some wintry precipitation. By Thursday, rain could stretch from the mid-Atlantic into the Northeast. The system will linger in the Northeast through Saturday, making for soggy weekend plans across Pittsburgh, New York and Burlington. Temperatures will remind you more of winter than spring. The East will get relief from the hot, stormy weather, but temperatures will drop farther than most would like to see in April. Places like Chicago, New York and D.C. will see highs only reaching the 40s early this week. But the heat will crank up in the West. Places like Boise and Albuquerque will soar into the 80s, while others like Phoenix and Las Vegas will reach the 90s. However, low temperatures will stay chilly across the country. An unusually strong upper-level ridge is allowing a springtime heat dome to settle over the Southwest and stretch into the Rockies—bringing summerlike temperatures well ahead of schedule. Dozens of April daily high temperature records are at risk this week, from Tucson, Arizona, to Billings, Montana. Triple-digit heat is possible across parts of the Southwest, including Phoenix and Palm Springs. Overnight lows will offer little cooling relief in the desert, though mornings will be notably cooler across higher elevations in the Rockies.
