Garden~

When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama.
Ah May... the planting madness is done..sure in FL there is atleast a few things to be planted this month. A good time to assess how much room will be available when the squash, cucs & garlic are gone, to plant some replacements. Southern Peas are black eye, pink eye & cow pea varieties. They fix Nitrogen in the soil, a great summer cover crop that follows heavy feeders like squash wonderfully. They love heat & can dry on the dead bush to be picked after you return from summer vacation.

It's a good thing the planting has let up as the spring & summer garden begin to take over. Feeding, watering, staking/caging & harvesting is the main garden chores for the month with most likely a little bit of weeding.

North FL Lima beans, eggplant, okra, southern peas, sweet potatoes, Gourds & broomgrass.

Central FL ..Plant~ okra, southern peas, sweet potatoes, Gourds & broomgrass.

South FL sweet potatoes, southern peas, Gourds & Broomgrass.

30th-31st Excellent Time For Planting Corn, Beans, Peppers, And Other Aboveground Crops. Favorable For Sowing Hay, Fodder Crops, And Grains. Good For Planting Flowers.

Hey Skye - I still read Jeff's blog itself, it is very good IMHO and he is a little like an internet version of Carl Sagan as a populist science promoter.

In remembrance of Carl Sagan, I remember well that his scientific specialty before he became famous was planetary meteorology and climate, and that he wrote some controversial papers on the weather and climate of Venus and Mars, for example. He wasn't always correct, but he challenged conventional thinking and that in itself often drove the science forward.

As for the comments, I still often read them, I just do not enjoy posting as much. I do not use "ignore" either, but I see a lot of posters bragging about how big their "ignore list" is, and that is one of the bad side effects of a bad policy. I don't enjoy participating in a virtual society with those kind of values.

On a tangent, for Rob...I have often used Diatomaceous earth as a soil amendment, my source was an oil absorbent sold by NAPA auto parts. Saves a lot of money, and as far as I can tell there is no added salt or chemicals, it is just more granular and not graded as fine.

Hey everyone~ Beryl sure cooled off the pools around here..Had another 0.08" today in about 3 mins.

Rob~ Diatomaceous Earth..since I started throwing this stuff around a few times a year I have had no hornworms.. Kills roaches like a dream too among many other things. Get the food grade.

I was surprised my pic got featured. Like that Masters still does that. I should feature more. WU gets the best weather shots!

Wab~ The way it was drawing on it..it's a good thing..

Hope you get rain. Been a nice change here.

Guy~ I don't know why I enjoy posting more on Masters' so much. Sometimes there is inspiring or something to learn from. It can be my dose of chaos too I guess. More people to take on the ride maybe. I tend to share my deepest weather thoughts & such in both by request. I've had wu-mails form people that would assume not go through the main to see what I'm posting.

I don't use the ignore feature. For some though, I don't think they could function looking at the whole mob. If I'm getting ready to be hit by a storm I might change the filter.

Have been getting a pretty good soaking for most of the afternoon/early evening.

When you get a minute away from storm watching, what is the best way to get rid of tomato horn worms without too much toxics. (don't say pick them off by hand. They can ravage a tomato plant overnight) Thought I might not get them this year, then suddenly...there they were.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Have a great night...will check back tomorrow.

GEOS-5 is still picking up Caribbean blob. Yesterday the run went over extreme west Cuba & landed on Tampa as a weak TS. Lastnight's run shifted west a bit...hitting Cancun & then going for the panhandle of FL with most the moisture being sheared to the east over FL. Moisture may start streaming into the state on Thursday.

Skye - I am off for a predawn jog up on the Tables beach, but first I wanted to second Rob's motion with a big thanks for keeping me updated on the storm. You are far more efficient and organized than me in finding and posting information, and that makes your analysis much more informed than mine as well.

For the first time in a long time I had a good fun hour or two posting on the main blog yesterday, but usually the S/N ratio is far too low there and everyone tends to talk past one another. As a social medium, that "ignore" feature is a big mistake too because you never know who you are speaking to, it is just a cop-out to make admin easier.

I try not to ramble too much here on your blog so as to keep the noise down, hopefully I can restrain myself until I have something useful to say...but this big Thank You is necessary!

Not as much rain as I hoped yesterday, my naranjilla was wilting on the north side of my house in the evening. Will check the gauge later this morning. I hope Beryl continues west so we can get some south or SSE steering to pin the seabreeze just onshore all day with some awesome convergence...we will see.
Take care!

A lot of the drama is well removed from the center.
Have already had gusts over 60 and penny sized hail. Oh, and more rain in 15 minutes than we've had for a month.

Did I mention lightning?

Wow, a party without cooking!
Lucky Lady!

Already some thunderstorm activity over here today. Just missed me though. If the wind dies down a little I might roast some corn and peppers on the grill.

Enjoy your afternoon, and thanks for the updates.

Today is going to be a lazy day here. Might even take a nap later. Hope you get all the rain you want and nothing severe.

Morning all~ up at the crack of noon. Beryl is looking way more tropical. CI# is up to 2.6. Weakening flags are off. No Limit on the constants & the scene is curved band. Might be a touch south of OFCL.

Rob~ Hope you slept as good as I:)

Guy~ Sorry about your yard snake.. Hope your successful with incubating the eggs. I think some lay twice a year. Mine made me jump yesterday..It hit the window while hunting lizards up in the Jasmine.

Hey Skye! I was outside putting in some new trees this morning thinking of rain but no destructive winds. Judging by the visible sat loop I just viewed, Beryl is learning to do the tropical thing. There is definitely an upper level anticyclone trying to form above the storm now. Maybe she will cross very close to 30N by 80W?

Just a small thing in light of larger events today, but while digging I disturbed my "mama snake" just as she was laying her eggs, the same snake whose breeding picture I posted on an earlier blog of yours. Sad to say I might have injured her, but she slithered away in a panic. The eggs are brand new. I feel very bad, and I guess I am going to have to be the "snake daddy" now. I will do my best to incubate the eggs until they hatch.

I'll post pictures if there is a happy ending.
