The Moore, Oklahoma tornado of May 20, 2013 is now ranked an EF-5, making it one of only 59 U.S. tornadoes to achieve that distinction since record keeping began in 1950. This morning, the Oklahoma Insurance Department said the preliminary tornado damage estimate could top $2 billion. This would make the 2013 Moore tornado the 2nd most expensive tornado in history.

In spite of days that now feature as much as 19 hours of daylight in Fairbanks at this time, winter in Alaska has stubbornly dragged on into the 3rd week of May. April was the coldest such on record for Fairbanks and the city has yet to see a single day with above normal temperatures since April 2nd. Temperatures fell to -12°F (-24.4°C) in Deadhorse just yesterday (May 19th).

As the dry and seasonal weather begins to break across the Northeast, increasing threats for rain are likely over the area. A widespread soaking rain is likely for the middle to end of the week followed by significantly below normal temperatures to start off the second week in May.
