Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, May 13, 2008.

A two headed low pressure system will move up the coast of eastern Asia on Tuesday, bringing wet weather to the Korean Peninsula and Japan. While the strongest portion of the low, tropical cyclone Rammasun, will slide east of Japan, the nation will likely see showers and gusty winds along the coast of Honshu, but the heaviest precipitation will remain offshore. High surf is also likely along east facing beaches of the nation.

The second part of the low will bring more wet weather to the Korean Peninsula where some downpours are likely as the low passes directly overhead. West of Korea, the eastern Asian interior will remain mostly dry as high pressure sits atop the region.

Southeast Asia will remain wet on Tuesday as tropical moisture streams into the region. Especially heavy rain is anticipated throughout Southeastern Myanmar where a weak tropical cyclone could develop. The storm is expected to remain close to land throughout its lifetime, and should not be able to intensify to the level that caused massive destruction throughout the nation earlier this month.

South of the equator, Australia will see a few thunderstorms across the eastern interior, but the majority of the nation will be dry. The East coast will continue to see a few showers and clouds, and the southwestern corner of the nation will feel temperatures drop sharply as a cold front crosses the region bringing rain and a few thunderstorms.

An unusually early and violent tornado season

Dr. Jeff Masters

An EF-4 tornado with winds of 166-175 mph swept through Oklahoma and Missouri Saturday, killing 21 people. Hardest hit were the towns of Picher, OK, where six died, and Seneca, MO, where ten died. The violent tornado was up to a mile wide. It's been an unusually early and violent tornado season in the U.S. There have been 905 tornadoes so far this year, a total usually not seen until late July (Figure 1). Saturday's deaths bring the 2008 U.S. tornado death toll up to...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

A couple incredible hail facts occurred on this date. First, in 1975, hail the size of tennis balls amassed to a depth of 10 inches in Wernersville, Penn. Also, in 1930, a farmer was killed in a hailstorm near Lubbock, Texas accounting for the only official United States death due to hail.
