Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 15, 2008.

In northern Asia, a broad trough of low pressure will remain in the Sea of Japan Thursday, resulting in continued scattered rain showers and cool weather across the Korea Peninsula and northern Japan. A brief dry spell can be expected Thursday night, but isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected again on Friday in the Korea Peninsula and Honshu. Farther west, an unseasonably cold system will drop southeast into portions of northeastern China and eastern Mongolia Friday, bringing much colder temperatures with scattered precipitation.

A weak system will race through central-eastern China late Thursday and Friday morning, triggering light to moderate rain. Otherwise, much of the eastern China can expect a mild and dry day.

Moving to Australia, a cold front will brush through far southern Western Australia Thursday, producing light to moderate rain with periods of gusty winds. Ahead of the front, another weak system will move through southern South Australia and portions of New South Wales. Also, light to moderate rain is anticipated with this system. Farther east, moist onshore flow is likely to trigger a few showers and thunderstorms along the east coast. High pressure builds across the western and central part of the continent, providing warm and dry weather.

Monsoon rains approaching Myanmar

Dr. Jeff Masters

The weather in the region ravaged by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar has taken a turn for the better today, after a low pressure system that brought heavy rains and 20-30 mph winds yesterday weakened and moved off to the north. This system appeared to be a threat to develop into a tropical depression yesterday, but interaction with land is hindering its development, and the low is no longer expected to become a tropical depression. Weather History:

Did you know that...

When you think of tornadoes, Alaska usually does not pop into mind. The only recorded Alaskan tornado to touch down occurred on this date in 1968 near Anchorage. Meanwhile, in the lower forty-eight states, another tornado at Jonesboro, Ark. killed 34 people.
