Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, August 30, 2008. Hurricane Gustav will continue to rapidly strengthen throughout the weekend as it remains on a crash course with the Gulf Coast. On Saturday, it will move over the western tip of Cuba, causing some weakening before it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. Once it moves into this warm body of water, a rapid intensification is expected before it makes landfall along the Gulf Coast on Monday night. Residents along the Gulf Coast should monitor the progress of this dangerous hurricane. For more information, please see http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/.
Meanwhile, a frontal system will move through the eastern third of the country and produce scattered showers and some thunderstorms from the Southeast through the Northeast.
A high pressure system behind this front will provide dry conditions through the Mississippi Valley and into the Great Lakes.
Also, monsoonal moisture will creep into the Southwest once again, aiding in the production of additional showers and thunderstorms in the Four Corners region.
A trough of low pressure will creep onto the West Coast, effectively endig the week's heat wave aside for some inland areas.
The Southeast will rise into the 90s, while the Northeast will see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Northern Plains will rise into the 90s, while the Southwest will see temperatures in the 90s and 100s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a high of 107 degrees at Fresno, Calif.
